CBC Marketplace conducted a study on over 20 masks and this is what they found:
"Marketplace's test found some masks are just as good as an N95 when it comes to filtering out those potentially harmful particles, including one made with something called polypropylene fabric. Polypropylene fabric, in this case, is a melt-blown, non-woven plastic fabric. Melt-blown, non-woven polypropylene (NWPP) is commonly used in surgical and N95 masks.
Made in Korea, these individually wrapped surgical respirators are specifically designed for use in hospitals and operating rooms to protect both the surgical patient and the operating room personnel from transfer of microorganism, body fluids and particulate material. Because of this, they’re also perfectly suitable for use in the community to protect one another from airborne transmissions. Independent tests show the Point 1 having a filtration efficiency of >99%.
This filtration testing was conducted by Kinetrics in Canada and the Point 1 Nano was shown to have a Particulate Filtration Efficiency of 99.38% and a Bacterial Filtration Efficient of 99.75%. The samples were tested using ASTM F299 test methods. For comparison N95's have filtration efficiency of >95%.
These masks are made with a 3D design that fit all face types, preventing sliding, fogging up or causing skin irritation. The design has also taken into account the ability to seamlessly fit into more readily available non-surgical masks to provide the additional level of protection.
Despite this level of complexity in the design, the mask weighs in at less than 4 grams; lighter than a sheet of paper!
Best of all, the Point 1 can be reused; an essential feature that reduces the risk of shortages of these vital pieces of protective equipment. In one experiment, even after undergoing 10 rounds of washing, the Point 1 mask retained its shape and continued to filter out 94% of contaminants.
